3 Reasons to Study the Cell
- Cancer: Normal cells have a well-regulated life cycle. When this cycle is disrupted, it can cause abnormalities that lead to cancer.
- Genetic diseases: Down syndrome, cystic fibrosis, sickle-cell disease and hundreds of other conditions result from genetic errors during the first few divisions of a fertilized egg.
- Bacterial infections: Human and bacterial cells have some key differences. Scientists try to exploit these differences to develop antibiotic drugs that kill bacterial cells but not human ones.
