Read about Atul Butte, M.D., Ph.D., in the March 2008 issue.
Doctor-Scientist
Stanford University
Palo Alto, CA
Both a pediatrician and a computer scientist, Atul Butte sees connections that others don’t—for example, the surprising link between adult heart attacks and childhood muscular dystrophy.
He discovered that both conditions affect the activity of the same set of genes, meaning that medications for heart attacks may also help kids with muscle wasting. By taking a broad, data-driven approach to medicine, Butte hopes to revamp the way doctors classify disease and, by doing so, find new uses for many old drugs.
