Read about Daniel Sessler, M.D., in the September 2003 issue.
University of Louisville School of Medicine
Daniel Sessler grew up with science at the dinner table. His physicist parents encouraged scientific discussion and even homemade experiments. Now Sessler, an anesthesiologist, is using his interest in science in the operating room.
Sessler has revolutionized anesthesiology by making some key observations about the body during surgery and anesthesia. For instance, keeping the body warmer and increasing the amount of oxygen given substantially decreases the rate of surgical infections. Sessler has questioned the standard practices of anesthesia and surgery and has created a multinational collaboration of clinical scientists to help answer key questions in the field of anesthesiology.
