Genetic Research
cientists can now read the information in the complete set of human genes, called the human genome. But this ability is only a beginning. Researchers still need to figure out what all of our genes do and how genes interact with lifestyle factors to affect healthknowledge that holds tremendous promise for treating, curing, and preventing diseases. By participating in genetic research, you can help scientists understand how genes influence health and illness.
The National Institutes of Health is dedicated to listening to both individuals and communities about the impact of genetic research. The National Institutes of Health held its first "community consultation" on this topic in September 2000 and has continued dialogues with various communities since that time.
